Born in Montreal on June 29, 1928 and passed peacefully with family by his side at Markham Stouffville Hospital on July 29, 2026.
Stan lived a full and blessed life, with modest beginnings in Verdun, Quebec where he forged deep connections and a strong compass that guided his life-long path. Stan was the eldest of 3 siblings born to Catherine and John Taylor (sisters Elizabeth and Heather). Stan frequently regaled family with stories of his Verdun origins, boy scouts, cadets and old-school hockey, using strapped on magazines as shin pads. Scouting was the formation of his 80+ year kinship with recently deceased comrade and best friend, Keith Spurr. After highschool, coinciding with the end of WWII, having an aptitude for numbers, Stan started his work-life at the Bank of Toronto in Montreal in an entry position. At the age of 23 he married the girl next door, Audrey (Forsyth), with permission from both the Bank Manager and Audrey’s parents (Alec and Gladys). Living in the Verdun neighbourhood, their first child followed within the year (Sheryl); later, Stan and Audrey would be blessed with two additional children, (Stuart and Sharon). Stan’s diligence in his vocation had him noticed by a bank client from Nesbitt Thompson, who recruited him into the fold in 1955. In turn, Stan was encouraged by mentors to take on studies in accounting, later earning his CGA designation. Stan went on to have a 35 year long, successful career with the firm, spanning money markets and bond trading through to investment banking and corporate finance, eventually relocating to Toronto, and retiring in 1990 from his position as Senior Vice-President and Director with what is now BMO Nesbitt Burns.
While Stan was extremely focused in his career and was achievement driven at work , his compass remained family and friendships. Closer to retirement, Stan and Audrey acquired Fortay Pines in Uxbridge, where they garnered much joy through the many years of gatherings with friends and the extended and growing family. In the Uxbridge community, Stan became an active member of St. Paul’s Anglican church, where he acted on the Audit and Finance Investment committees. Stan also proudly provided the church with an annual gift of an enormous Christmas tree from Fortay Pines erected with help from the grandkids and parish friends. Stan was transformed and re-branded to the very much loved “Toto” with the arrival of his first grandchild. Toto blossomed to legendary status over the years, giving top priority to attending graduations, soccer, hockey, ringette, piano recitals and the like, lending a guiding hand, sharing stories, and providing grandparental support in all ways. In retirement, Stan also enjoyed much travel, especially to historic locations, including many trips with his grandchildren. Happily, he had occasion to continue travel with his second wife for a number of years. Stan enjoyed many milestone birthdays to the end, and we are ever grateful for the many times over we have celebrated fully, completely, together. For who knows when we’ll be all together again, singing, we’re all together again, we’re here!
Stan is predeceased (1992) by wife Audrey (Forsyth), mother to their three children Sheryl Freeman (Ian Wilson), Stuart (Pauline King-Taylor), and Sharon (Andy Tratnik). Toto is lovingly remembered to nine grandchildren and their partners, Taylor (Tamara), Spencer (Amra), Blake, Logan (Sophia), Scott (Chelsea), Melanie (Jack), Harry (Janet), Nathan, and Alec. Amazing great grandfather to Audrey, Lucas, Sigourney and Sabina.
Will be sadly missed by sisters Elizabeth and Heather Marrelli, and niece Lisa, nephew John (Diana) and sister-in-law Joyce Coleman. Survived by second wife Gloria (separated 2012).
The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to the many care providers who assisted Stanley over his elder care chapter including PSWs and nurses at Bloom Stouffville and Sunrise Markham, and Stouffville Physiotherapy. Most especially, we are thankful for the exceptional care and grace exemplified by the nurses, doctors, chaplin and other health care professionals at Markham-Stouffville Hospital, especially in his final days in the Palliative Care unit..
Celebration of Life Visitation will take place at Low & Low Funeral Home, 23 Main Street South, Uxbridge on Tuesday, August 11, 2026 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral service at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 59 Toronto Street South, Uxbridge on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at 11:00 AM followed by interment at Uxbridge Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations are appreciated to Markham Stouffville Hospital, SickKids Hospital, Cystic Fibrosis or a charity or faith organization of your choice.
