It is with deep gratitude for a life well lived that the family of Ruth Smith (nee MacVicar) announce her peaceful passing. Ruth was born on September 7th, 1929, and passed on July 4, 2026, surrounded by her loving daughters.
Ruth was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. She met the love of her life Kenneth Smith in her teenage years and never looked back. They had a wonderful life together for 48 years before his passing in 1997. With two small children they moved to Galt in 1954. The family quickly settled into life becoming members of the Salvation Army and Ruth working at the A&P Store. When the A&P Store closed, she worked for Gore Mutual Insurance and then moved on to becoming caretaker for the rebuilt Salvation Army Citadel until she retired.
First and foremost, Ruth was dedicated to her family. She will be missed by her daughters Darlene Kress (Jim), Judy McDowell (Gary), Kendra Neudoerffer (Mike) and Lois Skirrow (Scott). Her grandchildren Jamie (Holly), Lindsay, Jenn (Brad), Jason, Heather (Johnnie), Noah (Hannah) and great grandchildren Zack, Tyler, Abbey, Jordan and Zoey will miss their Nanny dearly especially her carrot cake and butter tarts. Ruth always enjoyed having the family close and always had a sweet treat available. Ruth will also be missed by her siblings Roddy, Valerie, Edna and Johnnie.
Ruth had many passions. She loved helping out in many parts of The Salvation Army, Sunday school, songsters, Christmas pageants and preparing food for the church gatherings. Her greatest passion though was baking. She would make hundreds of cookies to give away as gifts for Christmas and family meals always had a choice of several desserts.
The family would like to thank the staff at Fairview Mennonite Home long term care for their excellent care. We appreciate how Donna, Kristi, Cassandra and Lori became instant friends to Ruth and the whole family.
The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, July 8th from 2-4 p.m. and a celebration of her life will take place at 7 p.m. at the Salvation Army Cambridge Citadel Corp, 16 Shade Street Cambridge Ontario. As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to The Salvation Army Cambridge Citadel or Cambridge Memorial Hospital.
