In Loving Memory of Edward Joseph Hopper (1935 – 2026) It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Edward “Ed” Hopper on Sunday, August 9th, 2026, at the age of 91. Born and raised in Toronto, Ed grew up in a loving family and remained deeply connected to the values he learned in his early years. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Eileen; his daughter, Mary Theresa; his grandson, Matthew; his parents, William and Josephine (née Donnelly); his brother, William James “Jim”; and his sister, Ellen.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Diana; his children William (Kathy), Stephen (Karen), Mary (Pat), Mark (Jenny), Theresa (Eric), and Michael (Kelli); his grandchildren Andrew (Monica), Daniel (Jocelyn), Thomas (Chelsea), Elizabeth (Arthur), Mason, Connor, Emily (Max), Charlotte, Monica, Paulina (David), Julia (Dylan), Amelia, Veronica (Darryl), Patrick (Michaela), and Tyler; and his nine great-grandchildren. Ed spent his working life with Canada Post, where his strong work ethic and dependable nature were evident throughout his career. He was a hardworking man who showed up through rain or shine, and that same determination, reliability, and responsibility defined not only his work, but the way he lived his life.
Above all, Ed cherished his family, who were his pride and joy. He loved family gatherings and holidays, when everyone could come together to share good food, conversation, laughter, and time together. He took great satisfaction in watching his family grow through the generations and in the lives and accomplishments of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A devout Catholic, Ed’s faith was another important pillar of his life. He attended Mass faithfully and found comfort and joy in hymns, prayer, and the community of the Church. His faith gave him a deep connection to God and was an important source of strength and guidance throughout his life.
Ed appreciated the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed reading, listening to good music, doing crosswords and puzzles, and sharing conversations. Having lived guided by faith, integrity, and love for his family, Ed will be remembered for his great sense of humour, quiet strength, dependable nature, and the lasting place he held in the lives of those who knew and loved him. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to all those who were involved in Ed’s life and care, especially the caring and compassionate staff at The Village of Taunton Mills Long Term Care in Whitby.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 am on Tuesday August 18, 2026 at St John’s the Evangelist Church. 903 Giffard Street, Whitby Ontario
