Anastasios Georgiou

He is a devoted husband, loving father, and cherished member of his family passed away peacefully at the age of 93 surrounded by his family after a brief bout of pneumonia.

Anastasios Georgiou is survived by his two daughters Ioanna and Eleni, their husbands Panagioti and Vasilis and his sister Olga who lives in Greece. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years Eleftheria and his siblings Eleni, Panagioti, Alexandra and Chrisoula.

He was born on March 9, 1933, in Prodromi, Epirus, Greece, to Georgios and Giannoula and was the third of six children.

Like many people of his generation, Anastasios lived through the turbulent years of WWII. Following the war, he attended the police academy in Athens and served as a police officer in many parts of Greece and was quickly promoted to the Greek Tourist Police Office in Igoumenitsa.

He met and married his beloved wife, Eleftheria (née Liolios), in 1962.

Shortly after their wedding, in 1963, Anastasios and Eleftheria made the courageous decision to move from Greece to Canada, seeking a better life and more opportunity. They made the long journey by ship to Halifax and then by train to Toronto, where they established their new home. Anastasios became a Canadian citizen in 1972.

Once settled, they welcomed their first daughter, Ioanna, and several years later, their second daughter, Eleni.

Anastasios was a devoted father who worked tirelessly to provide for his family, ensuring his daughters received a post secondary education and were married. He found employment at Neilson’s, where he became a Class 1 Candy Maker and eventually rose to the level of Team Leader.

Beyond his dedication to work and family, Anastasios was known for his sharp mind and deep spirituality. He was an ardent student of history, politics and the news, following daily events with great interest on television and in both Greek and English newspapers. He was a spiritual man who attended church regularly at St. Irene’s Greek Orthodox Church in Toronto. He was beloved and respected by both his immediate and extended family, who often sought his counsel.

His hands were rarely idle; he was an avid gardener who maintained a bountiful vegetable garden at his home for many years. He was also often occupied by one or more home improvement projects. Reflecting a youthful joy he never lost, he loved to climb trees, keep active and fit, an ability he proudly maintained well into his 80’s.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.
